While Young Living has a vast range of personal care, cleaning products, make up, nutraceuticals AND essential oils, they began as an essential oil company so I thought I’d share some EO basics. I use essential oils for a variety of reasons in my day to day and have done for years. I use them for:
- Making simple home – cleaning products
- Perfumes
- Adding boosts to moisturisers for skin benefits and challenges
- To diffuse toxins out of my home environment and freshen the air
- In some cooking (once you’ve popped a drop of lemon oil into an aioli or peppermint into chocolate, there’s no going back! BUT there’s a lot of dangerous info out there about people adding drops of oil to everything beyond safety limits so do be careful and research safe amounts and methods before ingesting in any way, shape or form)
- To balance emotions and lift my mood on gloomy days.
- To support focus and motivation
- To work miracles for your skin with DIY serums or with your hair adding treatment drops into your chosen haircare
- To calm and soothe when feeling unwell – head breathing in Eucalyptus steam anyone? You should try the amazing RC blend from YL for the same purpose. So good!)
WHAT IS AN ESSENTIAL OIL?
An essential oil is a natural oil typically obtained by distillation and having the characteristic odour of the plant or another source from which it is extracted. They are found in leaves, barks, stems and leaves and other parts of plants and which possess the properties of each particular plant. Young Living essential oils are extracted through careful steam distillation, resin tapping, and cold pressing, the purest essential oils are far more powerful than the botanicals from which they come.
WHY I LOVE YOUNG LIVING OILS OVER OTHERS ON THE MARKET.
Why I chose Young Living (YL) over other oils, and what I love about them is their ‘Seed to Seal’ quality assurance and the passion and purpose with which Gary Young founded the company – One little plot of land and a big dream over 25 years ago and now many farms of their own around the world and many partnerships with farms beyond that who produce exclusively for them. YL follow a five-step process which selects and plants seeds, farms, distils and bottles with vigorous independent AND internal testing to produce the purest, most authentic essential oils. Do a side by side sniff test of any YL oil and their ‘other brand’ equivalent and you will see they’re a cut above. I still remember sniffing the peppermint for the first time and thinking OOOOOhh that’s what peppermint has the potential to smell like. So powerful!
A Young Living member can visit any of the farms at any time. It’s a fully transparent process and stepping on the soil of one of the farms is amazing. I have this one memory back in 2017 of having a foot bath in the little creek that had water run off streaming down from the distillery where juniper was being distilled that day. My feet were baby smooth after that foot bath and we all felt so energised.
Fun harvest fact: When it comes time to harvest, they will be testing a plant every two hours with micro samples, to assess the level of plant actives, so that they harvest at the absolute most active time of the plant, resulting in the highest ORAC scores possible, with that testing commitment. You can smell the difference on the nose. Absolute purity and potency.
Some of my absolute favourites from the range?
In the oils… Rosemary, peppermint, Clarity (work time!) Present Time (my meditation go to), Stress Away (my perfume), Believe or Abundance (my morning dabs for some BOOM factor: Let’s do this!), Hanoki, Vetiver (earth as all heck and I find it absolutely calming when I need to be brought back down to the ground pronto!), Grounding (another great calming one) Balsam Fir and Idaho Blue Spruce (love for those days I feel inflamed. Great support!), Ericafolia, Grapefruit, Sclaressence (hello hormone balance!) Awaken, Deep Relief (hello sore muscles after tennis!) Egyptian Gold, Sacred Mountain and Helichrysum (hair and skin for the win!) Just to name a few faves.
In the product range… The Art Face Serum is in my top 5 low tox products. It’s SO good. I use it every day. The new Bloom skincare range I’ve just started using is divine too. Very refreshing, light and brightening. The sunscreen, SPF 50 is a brilliant fine texture and fragrance-free. The Inner Defense and Omegagize supplements. The Savvy Minerals, Mineral Make Up powder Warm 2, the savvy minerals lipglosses, the Jetsetter eyeliner which you can use wet or dry and the Volumising mascara. The Ningxia Red shot for an antioxidant burst in the mornings, the Thieves Household concentrate, Thieves foaming hand soap and soap, the Lavender hand cream. Those are the things on my YL roster over the year.
Because I love so many of the products from the range, that’s why it makes sense to have an “Essential Rewards” membership account. WHAT IS AN ESSENTIAL REWARDS (ER) ACCOUNT?
ER is a program where you spend a minimum of 50 PV (stands for ‘Personal Volume’ but it’s easier to think of it as ‘Points Value’) per month (think of it as one PV is equal to one US dollar). With the Essential Rewards program, you will earn points toward future product redemptions which you get for free, so it’s how you quickly accrue rewards points to redeem FREE essential oils any time you like. Think of it like Frequent Flyers.
What do you get for 50PV per month?
Anything you want. It’s a vast range of home products, exceptional make up, skin care, essential oils and high quality supplements. You change it every month in a simple online virtual office, private to you. Your order could include a beautiful oil or two and an all – natural foaming hand soap OR a Thieves home cleaner refill (LOVE that stuff, works out to be 0.90c per spray bottle diluted as an all purpose cleaner and completely natural) or a bath gel OR couple of oils, a Thieves Bar Soap and an aluminium – free deodorant for example. The options are endless!
Bonus Essential Rewards – spending 100PV or more per month
If you decide you’re a serious fan and increase your monthly order to 100PV or greater, you get loyalty gifts and other perks. This is what I do, and the points I accrue to then shop with, I use as my ‘birthday/teacher’s gift savings account, cashing in and ordering free products when I need them. This is also the order level required for you to earn commissions when your circle signs up with you and you build a team – but rest assured you’ll never be pressured by me to ‘start a business’ and of course you are supported if you do by a wonderful group of people. There are no Amway-auntie vibes.
My 100PV order looks like the couple of things I order every month or two spread across the monthly order. Lemon EO for my fabric softener/airfreshener for the wash; Ningxia red which we have as an anti oxidant shot in the winter when fresh berries are sparse, my Art Face Serum, the Sunscreen SPF 50, the Thieves foaming handwash for the bathroom and kitchen, bar soap and Omegagize supplement. From there, I’ll add to my order with things that run out less frequently like the EO’s and I always make it to 100PV, accruing 25 points per order into my ‘birthday pressie product savings account’.
If you ever need to do a big ER order every now and then, you’re rewarded with a whole bunch of bonus products too. I just ordered an extra couple of things I needed this month and received a free Ylang Ylang oil (the poster child oil for 2020 for its calming, anti-tummy-in-knots vibes. A little drop behind the neck and I honestly feel like the world is gonna be alright!)
WHAT IS A BASIC WHOLESALE ACCOUNT?
Basic wholesale account means you spend 50PV in a whole year in order to keep your wholesale pricing. This means you literally only need to purchase 1-3 oils or whatever other products total 50PV in a single order for the whole year to access that 24% discount! If you decide you want to drop down from the ER account to a Basic Wholesale Account once you’ve got your oil collection happening, and have managed to avoid the joining fee/paying for the starter kit, then it’s a simple phone call to head office and they’ll happily change this for you.
BUT – Essential rewards 50PV a month is an oil or two, and a toothpaste or a couple of soaps or a moisturiser or the amazing THIEVES cleaning products (SO good!) and you’re done. Might as well buy regularly on ER rather than here and there and bits and bobs in shops, because you earn back 10% on every order, going up to 25% back by the time you’re a member ordering consistently for 12 months or more and those points add up to then being able to being redeemed online for whatever you fancy.
