I used to work in cosmetics. I worked for the most prestigious French skincare brand. Our body scrub was $122 retail and the top skin cream was a whopping $360 dollars – that was all the way back in 1997. I still remember the thrill of selling one as a counter girl, or later helping sell truck loads of them with my team of consultants once I was a senior manager. I genuinely believed I was doing good. I genuinely believed I was giving people the best they could afford. I genuinely believed the brand made our customers look and feel beautiful.
I’m now 42 and honestly love the look of my natural skin. Now that the low fat, depleted nutrient days are over, my skin is plump, healthy and far from wrinkly. I still love my beauty products and have quite few delicious natural, organic ones in the cupboard, but I also am a big fan of the ol’ DIY. Here’s a super simple scrub that will take you exactly 40 seconds to whip up, using spent coffee grounds, coconut oil, sea salt and vanilla extract. Gents, this is so easy, you could surprise your lady by making it for her as a pressie – not saying the boys shouldn’t use this too. One for all and all for one!
Drain clogging prevention memo: Please use sparingly and ensure lots of hot water runs down the drains after use, so do it at the start of your shower, not the end – This way you minimise scrub-drain-clog potential. I’ve also found swapping out the coconut oil for olive oil to be good if you have pipes that clog easily.
Home Made Coffee Body Scrub
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp spent ground coffee from an espresso
- 1 tbsp celtic / himalayan / fleur de sel / dead sea / touched by the fairy godmother of an angel salt
- 2-3 tbsp coconut oil (more oil = gentler scrub)
- 2 tsp vanilla bean extract
Instructions
- Mix in a bowl. Put into a jar. That’s it. Takes less than a minute!
- And for a cute gift look, a little spoon and a gift tag!

Hi! I can’t wait to make this! I’ve just stumbled across your blog and I’m loving it! Do you know how long this body scrub would last once it’s made up and placed in a jar?
Thanks! 🙂

Hi Virginia – So lovely to have you here 🙂 The scrub lasts a good 3 weeks – that’s the longest I’ve ever had it before it’s run out though, so no doubt it would last even longer. Enjoy. It truly is delicious!
Thanks so much Alexx. I’m about to make it! Keep us this amazing blog! I’m learning so much from you! 🙂
Ooh I can’t wait to try this!!
Sounds a*mazing XX
I made this today with Crio Bru grounds I had stashed in the fridge. Blissful! My shower smelt like chocolate and vanilla and my skin felt great afterwards. I can see this making its way into Christmas hampers…

YUMMY!!
Sounds delicious. I can’t wait to make this. Having also worked in cosmetics and seen what goes into products I now live by the rule that if I can’t eat it, it doesn’t go on my body. As a result most of my products are homemade 🙂 Happy to have found your blog!
I’m so late to this party but thank you Alexx for this and everything you are doing! Loving your book and podcast, you have a lovely friendly yet clever and approachable style which is totally my jam!… And the scrub is awesome too!
Hi – I don’t drink coffee so don’t know what “spent ground coffee from an espresso” means?
Thanks
Hi Nic, spent grounds are just the coffee grounds that are left after making coffee. If you have a friend who drinks coffee, just ask them to save you the grounds. I just used the grounds left over from my Keurig cup. If you don’t know any coffee drinkers, I’m sure Starbucks, or any coffee house would be happy to share their spent grounds with you. 🙂 Hope this helps.
