When I think of the amount of times I’ve ‘soothed myself’ or been soothed, with jelly (jello) as a little one. While those times were years ago, I can’t help but think of the damage they may have done regardless, given the extent to which toxic ingredients lie in the average jelly.
Here’s a list of what’s up with this jelly… This is one to spread the word on. People need to know just how badly they’ve been duped. I’m also wondering how on earth this is legal to sell. You’ll see what I mean when I get to the bottom. This is without a doubt, one of the worst supermarket products I’ve ever exposed.
Ingredients decoded
Gelatin ‘Beef origin‘ – You can pretty much bet your bottoms this did not come from grass fed cows. The cheapest stuff would be from very sad, unhappy feedlot animals, full of antibiotics and gosh knows what else. The only gelatin I’d be using is Great Lakes Gelatin Company available via mail order through Organics on a budget if you’re in Oz, or extensively in the US. This stuff is gold. I’ll tell you exactly why soon!
952 – Calcium Cyclamate. Carcinogenic, can cause headache / migraine, itching, dermatitis, hives, eczema
955 – Sucralose. Causes shrunken thymus glands, enlarged kidneys and liver in animals.prohibited in infant foods
950 – Acesulphame potassium. prohibited in infant foods, reported to have produced tumours, leukemia and chronic respiratory disease in animals. Poor, poor lil’ things.
297 – Fumaric Acid. Derived from mostly GMO and petroleum source. Mmmm. Nice.
122 – Colour. Azorubine or carmoisine. Petroleum derived. Banned in the USA, JAPAN, CANADA (and not here in Australia!?!?!) Asthma, hyperactivity, rash and hive causing. Often also found in red medicine syrups.
133 – Brilliant Blue FCF – whatever that means. Petroleum derived again. carcinogenic, asthma causing, hayfever, gastrointestinal, eczema, dermatitis, hives, allergic reactions of all kinds.
Sulphites – Known cause of asthma, hyperactivity, headaches and allergic reactions of the skin.
So, the moral of the story is DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT, buy supermarket jelly ever again. It’s not fun. It’s not a treat. It’s actually a toxic poison. To think it’s a ‘treat’ associated with being a treat you eat while you’re sick. Crazy, right?
The question begs: How does this stuff get passed for legal sale?
What to do when you want jelly then?
Well, you can hop over to my jelly recipe post here. I promise, it’s so super easy!

It’s horrible to think Joanne I agree!

Hi Susan, we research ingredients like it’s our hobby! We go into even more depth in Go Low Tox – https://www.lowtoxlife.com/go-low-tox/ 🙂
Alexx,
I am interested in your sources, would you consider linking to them directly? Maybe the link posted above has been redirected, it doesn’t have anything about the actual sources

Hi Sam, I use the Chemical Maze app. You can download it here.
I mean, where are the actual studies and research into the negative health implications?
Is it like Aspartame, and how it is completely toxic, when in actuality it really is not?
You promote a healthy body through none toxic foods, but did you know most foods contain something that is toxic to our body? Guess what! Our bodies are highly intelligent, can compartmentalize everything and get rid of all that is bad! Shock!
Snake oil is snake oil at the end of the day. If you want to live a healthier life, cut alcohol down, lower sugar intake but enjoy what you want. If you want to lose weight, lower calories and reverse to gain. Toxic foods are not the answer. Just another way to sell 200 pages for $200
Excellent comment….Completely agree with this….how many magnitudes of the dose of each additive are needed to cause the said reaction in animals? Not the standard dose methinks….
