This week to round out our brain series, I interview Dr Mindy Pelz, a passionate evidence-based proponent for fasting and what it can do for the human body – while the benefits to the brain are something we discuss towards the end of the interview, the interview is packed with everything you might have ever had a question about when it came to fasting – why should we care? How does it work? How do different time periods work in different ways? How are men and women different when it comes to fasting and considering women, how are pre and post menopausal women different? What if it’s not ‘working’? What if I’m hungry? What if it makes me feel worse? But what about breakfast – isn’t it important? I can honestly say, this is one of the most efficient, chock full interviews on a subject I’ve done and I challenge anyone to not at least be curious about fasting by the end of this 75 min conversation.

Questions I asked Mindy:

  • A couple of q’s to start with on why you became a doctor, and why your style of doctor + then what led you to become interested in fasting for patients under your care… 
  • Fasting has become quite the loaded word – so many terms being thrown around, so many different protocols, memberships, some people saying ‘don’t go near it’ others saying it’s the cure all be all end all, others saying not for women, only works for men… Argh – Not eating has become just about as confusing for people as WHAT to eat, right? 
  • What happens when we fast? 
  • What happens when we fast for longer and longer periods of time? 
  • How is fasting different for different ages? Between men and women? And then with women at different times in the cycle? 
  • Are fasting and detoxification mutually exclusive?
  • How can we self-assess when it comes to embarking on a fasting experiment, whether it’s doing good/harm – what can we look out for and how to distinguish between uncomfortable barriers to push through vs harm? 
  • Let’s look at the brain specifically and how fasting may be a great thing to bring into the mix for the brain (as Dr Dale Bredesen actually talked about a couple of weeks ago on the show) – what builds up in our brain, how does that present symptomatically and how can fasting support us to clean things up in there? 
  • What’s a fasting foray we could all make this week, regardless of experience with fasting in the past? (like a week with zero snacks, or a gentle TRE window implementation, or 1 day when we don’t eat for 17 hours straight… just a little community challenge – maybe suggest 2 options and for peeps to choose one to try for themselves)
