And on this week’s show!

I don’t know about you but up until about 5 years ago, I never once thought “Gee, I wonder how much damage my hair tie is doing?” and yet, I had written extensively by that time about all sorts of everyday household items and the damage they did and what we could choose instead. It just goes to show, we only know what we know when we know it and today, we’re going to talk about hair ties, scrunchies, headbands and look under the hood of Koosho0 – including learning what the name means. It’s a lovely chat with founders Rachel Evans and Jesse Schiller about plastic waste, Island life without recycling capabilities, and the many things you have to think about when building a truly sustainable brand.

Questions I asked:

  1. Rachel, how did growing up on Norfolk Island inspire you to create this business? Were you a hippy child or born again AHA moment when it came to realising what you wanted to do in life?
  2. How is it running your business today from Norfolk Island today – do you feel like the general acceptance of remote work and connecting online has meant smaller footprint + more freedom to just say ‘yep let’s do this!’
  3. When we as the buyer at the end of things support small, conscious business – why is that so vitally important?
  4. Let’s talk about the hair tie industry: What kinds of materials are usually used to make them and where do they come from? Where are the biggest issues in the supply chain?
  5. What really goes into making a hair tie and why does it matter?
  6. What have been some of the stickiest moments getting a product like this off the ground to the standard you’ve been able to achieve?
  7. I’ve shared your hair ties a few times over the years and often there are a couple of comments about cost and I initially was also like ‘Woah, should I really?’ but then I got to thinking about what it means to buy excellent quality, conscious products and treat them with far more care – really, the low tox psychological shift thereof “make it last, buy less, buy more considered options”… do you find you help people on that journey/the mindset shift?
  8. You’ve been at this for over a decade – from what you’ve seen and experienced, what gives you reason for optimism about business and our planet going forward?

About

Founded in 2012 by husband and wife team Rachel Evans and Jesse Schiller, KOOSHOO created the first biodegradable hair ties! The yoga teacher couple wanted to create products that help others feel good–not just about their style, but also the products they use.

Where did the name KOOSHOO come from, you ask? KOOSHOO means “feeling good” in Norfuk, a language spoken only on Norfolk Island, a small island in the South Pacific. Both KOOSHOO’s founder Rachel and their product developer Leilani are Norfolk Islanders and felt that the word fits perfectly with their vision for the company.

KOOSHOO is dedicated to products that keep you feeling good – from the way they create their products to how it feels to use them. They want to celebrate you and your style, while being mindful of the earth.
