And on this week’s show!
What are some of the biggest factors that affect the health of our children today? How is growing up in a polarised black and white world affecting our kids? What happens to our kids if they are raised in a way that doesn’t factor in an understanding of differences in people, politics, and life choices? Today I invite Dr. Nicole Beurkens, a triple advance degreed psychologist, educator, and nutritionist to help us unpack raising kids in today’s ever polarised world and how we can support them to investigate the complexity of various global and local issues as well as how that feeds into greater resilience and peace. We also discuss some of the biggest things that move the needle for children’s health. It’s a powerful show and I hope you appreciate it as much as I did.
Questions I asked Nicole…
- Raising kids to be comfortable and open to nuance and complexity for a more peaceful future, and for greater mental resilience and health.
- Black and white thinking and the appeal/safety of/pitfalls of it generally first as well as judgment, pile-ons, takedowns, and how unhelpful these are to anyone getting what they want.
- More about early childhood – acknowledging and being curious about different people the way they look, choices they make with food or clothes or hair, what house they live in, the language they speak, etc.
- As well teens as they start to learn more about big issues in their country as well as global issues.
- Along with parent biases and beliefs can get in the way of the healthy development of a child, and what factors help us really raise a kid to be well rounded in their understanding of the nuance and complexity in many situations rather than jumping to black and whites.

This month, we’re featuring Nordic Naturals Arctic Cod Liver Oil as a great product to have in your tool kit. Talk to your health professional about therapeutic dosage levels or just take what’s written on the bottle for a daily benefit.
When it comes to the benefits of Omega 3s, there are many but I found two studies of interest – one on covid and long-covid that’s worth reading and another on the benefit for brain development and support for children and teens with ADHD. Get your Arctic Cod Liver oil at your local health shop or visit Thera Health Australia (therahealth.com.au) for stockists.
