Show #340 – Dr Ralph Esposito on blood sugar empowerment

Title show track, by LIOR.

Love the podcast music? You will hear excerpts from Lior’s track “Caught Up”  – go check it out on iTunes or Spotify if you want to hear the whole song or album, Scattered Reflections. Co-written with Cameron Deyell, it’s a great song and I love the reflective energy of it – perfect for the show, right? Enjoy. Lior is always touring, so do check out his website. It is wonderful to hear him sing live, trust me.

Blood Sugar – do you feel empowered? Want to?

On this show, we’re talking about stable blood sugar -possible testing you can do yourself or with a doctor, how often to check in on your blood sugar, red flags and what to do about them, best ways to achieve stabilising outcomes and good insulin sensitivity and MORE. Dr Ralph Esposito is one of my triple-threat-guests, ie, one of the few I’ve had back 3 times on the show (Check out two Men’s health-focused shows #91 #102). Why? Because he has trained broadly in Chinese medicine and is a licensed acupuncturist as well as being a Naturopathic Doctor, Functional Medicine practitioner. He also holds a position as an adjunct professor at New York University where he lectures on integrative medicine and specialises in hormones, integrative urology and men’s health. He has a wonderful way of explaining things that often feel complex and disempowering online, and I do hope you enjoy this interview on all things blood sugar.

Here are the questions I asked Ralph during our conversation:

  • Let’s start by talking about blood sugar in a bit of a 101 on blood sugar testing options, DIY and doc:  How comprehensive should that panel be and what is the reason we test for each of those things (Insulin/HB1AC/2 hr glucose tolerance testing and whatever else…)
  • We often see talk of elevated blood sugar and that’s what we’ll focus on in terms of solutions today, but blood sugar being too low is also not ideal – what causes that and what’s the difference in terms of exploration between frequent big dips in blood sugar vs chronically low Bsugar?
  • Are there inherent aspects to someone’s make up that make them more or less likely to process carbohydrates well or poorly? (genetics/race for eg)
  • What are the biggest environmental/lifestyle players when it comes to affecting blood sugar?
  • What are some of the key steps to nipping a minor blood sugar issue in the bud?
  • How can TCM support blood sugar issues – too high or too low?
  • And what about naturopathic interventions?
  • Every doctor on Instagram seems to be demo’ing continuous glucose monitors – is this more of a ‘fun thing to know’ if you’re otherwise healthy and fit and your labs look fine? When is it beneficial? What did you learn when you’ve done it in the past? Is it really that bad that food spikes your sugar? Isn’t most important how quickly one stabilises afterwards?
  • How important is muscle mass maintenance and building in the face of blood sugar balance or elevation?
  • And something I’ve started asking all my guests so that we can banish the idea that people are perfectly low tox in everything they do – what are your non-negotiable low-tox must-dos in daily life, and where do you go with the flow sometimes?
