Low Tox Loving – March

It’s March and it’s time to pop all the things I’ve been asked about and a few things I’ve come across and discovered, into a neat little list.

Before I launch into what I’d prepared, I have to to say that the most wonderful thing about March has been the Schools Climate Strike, founded by the inspiring young Greta Thunberg in Sweden, which my son and I, as well as my sister and nephew and 30,000+ Sydneysiders, partook in – and that was just Sydney’s turn out. Australia amassed 150,000 protesters all up and the global scale was huge. The youth are rising – no more compromising! (Our favourite chant of the day!) You can see my post on it here on Instagram.

The joy and empowerment of that day were quickly eclipsed by the horrible terrorist attack in NZ. My heart goes out to any low tox community peeps directly affected and hugs to each and every one of our community – it’s not easy to witness the worst of humanity when it rises from the dark recesses of the world. Self-awareness and flow of loving actions are what will get our world to a place of peace faster than anything so I’m going to spread that love around with even more fervour from this day forward and always note what the unhappiness or judgement in me is really about if and when it pops up in my life. Teaching ourselves to face our unpleasant feelings head-on is one of life’s greatest skills for a happy life connected to self and to others and there’s no more appropriate book/podcast than the one I aired last week with Dr Joan Rosenberg. Please do ensure you take a listen to the show.

1. Mitey Fresh – Healthy Home Assessments

If you’ve been a regular reader of LowToxLife.com for a while now, then you might have come across my mouldy story or heard me talk about it in person at some point. If you have, you’d know that I went to the ends of the earth to find out what was happening in my home and my body after years of chronic illness. It took me hundreds of hours of research and testing to finally realise that I had a serious mould-related illness known as CIRS.

It wasn’t until I shared my story on a more public platform that I realised just how many other people were struggling with similar health struggles, and the importance of sharing solutions became my top priority. This is where Mitey Fresh can help you out. These guys focus on the health of your family and home by supplying products and services to help you reduce exposure to allergens, mould, dust mites and more. I recently tried out their long-lasting Zeolite Packs to reduce mould, mildew and dampness in wardrobes and rooms. Not only do they reduce bacteria forming spores, but they can control odours/toxins from smoke, ammonia, methane, formaldehyde, hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, many odours. For me, anything to reduce the potential growth of mould is a win in my books, and these are a great price point for those who can’t jump straight to an air filter unit or dehumidifier.

If you’re really stuck on how to approach a toxic home, and you feel like you’re wading through information to try and find answers, know that Mitey Fresh has got building biologists on their team to provide support and carry out a complete home assessment if needed.

4. Nike Doing Good Things.

In keeping with my vibe on progress, not perfection, this initiative from Nike is awesome. When big business responds to topic trends such as the circular economy, we get places FAST because of the sheer quantity of their need for raw materials. I don’t know about you but I’d much rather wear recovered Flyknit yarn as a shoe than have it sent to landfill. Read more about their initiative here.

5. Essential Oil for March: Rosemary!

If you’re an oily person you’ll know that rosemary is just about one of the best oils to have on hand for diffusing, DIY or even some home remedies. My team and I love diffusing it throughout the day when we’re working together so we can all soak up its focus-inducing benefits. It’s a robust and herby scent and great for grounding your energy if you’re feeling a little flighty and cloudy headed (hello Mercury retrograde!).

If you want more information on essential oils, I love and use Young Living and have done for nearly 5 years. Gary Young was a brilliant man who upped the industry standards and safety of essential oils – a true pioneer and a brand that I wholeheartedly support due to their ethical and environmental standards and practices as well as safe recommendations. You can read up on why I choose YL here

6. Save Natural Therapy Rebates

It’s time to make a difference! You may know that naturopathic medicine helped me banish chronic tonsillitis and get my period back after a 2-year hiatus. In the last few years, it’s also provided incredible results and symptom relief for me while uncovering and treating my mould illness.

I’m a big believer that both allopathic and naturopathic forms of medicine are magical, depending on the situation. To think that both Western Herbal medicine and naturopathy will be coming off the claims list is ludicrous and so saddening. Practitioners are currently fighting for their rights to offer rebates to the general public so that their modality can be an option for the every-day person and not seen as ‘woo-woo’ or out of reach.

“Lack of evidence” has been cited as the primary reason for the removal from the rebate list, which is particularly ludicrous when one considers how hard pharmaceutical companies try to replicate what the natural herbs have the power to achieve. I bet you or someone you know has evidence of herbs / naturopathic medical advice working for you in your life, right?

We’re at 106,000 signatures + letters to Health Minister Greg Hunt MP and I KNOW we can keep pushing because I know how many people have the support of a gifted naturopath in their corner – Write in and let’s reverse this decision. It ain’t over until the Rhodiola sings! (great herb for adrenal support. hehe!)

This letter-to-the-govt will take you 1 minute to quickly pop a note in the template they’ve provided and hit ‘send’.

  7. The Oura Ring

Fun fact: The average person may spend more than 26 years of their life sleeping! So why do we need so much sleep? Well, 26 years of good sleep helps you manage weight, live a longer healthier life, perform at your physical and mental peak and continue to grow mentally and physically. This is where the Oura Ring comes in, It’s a durable and sleek ring, made of titanium and diamond-like carbon coating (DLC). It’s nonallergenic, non-metallic, and made up of infrared optical pulse measurement sensors, a 3D accelerometer, gyroscope and a body temperature sensor. Phew! In case you hadn’t gathered… it’s super high tech and these are just some of the reasons that I love it:

  • It’s great for supporting healthy sleep practices – It registers your body temperature reading every minute while you sleep. By comparing that value to values from earlier nights, it indicates your body temperature baseline and any variations from it. It’ll also keep track of your nightly sleep cycle, including the amount and timing of deep, REM, light sleep, and possible awake time during the night. The real power in this is that over time you can track patterns. I have found it to be indispensable in recovering from CIRS.
  • It’s awesome for understanding when and how best to move your body – The Oura Ring detects the amplitude and intensity of your body movement, automatically recognising that you’re active and tracks the time you were inactive during the day. With this info, you can pick and choose which days to move, how much to push yourself and how best to recover. It also gives you a daily activity goal to work towards that is solely based on you and your needs and how you’ve slept the days before.
  • You can keep track of your vital signs – perhaps not super essential to everyone, but if you’re looking for the most accurate readings of your respiratory rate and resting heart rate it’s awesome. The sooner during your sleep, your lowest resting heart rate is achieved, the better recovered you are and factors unfold the longer you have the ring, that will influence this. For example for me, when I have a couple of drinks: Boom, I can see it reflected in a late-achieved resting heart rate and a sense that I’m not well rested the next day. It’s a nice way to keep aware and accountable.
  • All of the information and data gathered is then aggregated and laid out on your smartphone so you can understand it and don’t worry. The blue tooth is only enabled when you open the app to sync it. At all other times, it doesn’t emit blue tooth and the battery is small and 6-7 days lasting so not much being emitted from there too. It’s the lowest EMF option I’ve found.

8. Earthing Oz SafeSleeve Anti-Radiation Leather Phone Case $85

If you’re like me and a large portion of work happens through your phone, then you’re also probably worrying about the sheer amount of time you spend with it by your ear, in your pockets, and near your body all day long. That’s why I got myself one of these Earthing Oz anti-radiation and RFID blocking cases. The amazing technology used in the fabrics of the case actively divert radiation away from the head and sensitive brain tissue of the user. Yes, it’s an investment, but for me, it’s peace of mind that I’m at least avoiding some of that radiation each day. I constantly get asked about this, so this is what I use. Grab yours here.

9. Book of the month – “90 seconds to a life you love: How to master your difficult feelings to cultivate confidence, resilience and authenticity.” $25

Every now and then you come across a book that is a ‘Goosebump book’. Best-selling author and cutting-edge psychologist Dr Joan Rosenberg delivers one such book with her latest “90 seconds to a life you love: How to master your difficult feelings to cultivate confidence, resilience and authenticity.” I recently had the pleasure of interviewing her for the Low Tox Life podcast.

You can have a listen to the podcast show we did  here (some of you have said it’s soared to your top 5 of all time shows!!) or search for it in your podcast app, and you can get a copy of her book “90 seconds to a life you love”on Booktopia or Book Depository (for internationals).

Joan’s book teaches you how to be fully present and aware when you experience unpleasant feelings, how not to block or avoid difficult emotions with alcohol, food or denial, and how to ride through the wave of these feelings. Most of which only last for 90 seconds.

Once you’ve had a read and perhaps even listened to the podcast, you‘ll be equipped with the tools to move through emotions successfully, handle unpleasant feelings and cultivate the path to resilience, emotional strength, positive self-esteem and authenticity.

It’s called the Rosenberg Reset and it will change your life! Promise! I am so thrilled that Joan is going to join us in the Low Tox Club for a second – and live – interview in May, too, for our book club element of the club. It’s going to be epic to have all read the book and deep dive with her.

10. Lion’s Mane – LifeCykel $27.96

Life Cykel is an evolutionary focused mycelium biotechnology company that engineers positive solutions to real-world problems. Julian the co-founder joins me on the show March 18th. The guys who run the business are doing awesome innovative work to make sure that their business model always circulates back into the environment and economy with minimal impact. They currently have a bounty of amazing medicinal mushroom products that they are most famous for, and one of my favourites is Lion’s Mane.

Lion’s mane mushrooms, also known as Hou Tou Gu or Yamabushitake, are large, white, shaggy mushrooms that resemble a lion’s mane as they grow. Hence the name hehe. They’ve been used traditionally for thousands of years in Asian cultures, but have now been picked up by the Western world for their amazing health benefits. It’s believed that  Lion’s Mane may protect against dementia, relieve mild depression and anxiety, improve the rate of recovery from nervous system injuries, reduce the risk of heart disease and help to manage Type 2 Diabetes.

You can grab yours here.

11. Have you seen the first pumpkin yet?!

Beautiful Autumn has finally arrived, though if you’re one of my fellow Aussie East-Coasters you may agree that it doesn’t always seem that way! Anyhoo, my question to you is what’s your first autumnal dish on the menu? Mine has to be my Brown Rice Pumpkin Risotto. It’s an absolute winner and well worth the labour it takes to create. There’s something about the switch up of brown rice that makes it so nutty and delicious. If you’re mourning the summer that was, then this might just cheer you up a little bit!

So there we go, hopefully, a few ideas to get the creative juices going, expand the mind and try new things. If you’re a small business owner with a wonderful low-tox product or service then please share with me below or pop us an email at [email protected]
